NSSI is currently in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-The Fifth Edition (DSM-V) under the categories of borderline personality disorder (BPD) and topics for further study. In BPD, NSSI is considered a symptom of the disorder itself. In the category of topics for further study, a set of diagnostic criteria is given, as if was classified as a mental disorder; however, the criteria is not intended for clinical use and may only be used to conduct research on the topic. Topics under this category are usually on their way to becoming a classified mental disorder but do not have quite enough clinical research and information yet to actually become a diagnosis. NSSI should become a complete diagnosis because diagnoses lead to comprehensive treatment and understanding of th e illness, better insurance coverage for those with the illness, and social enlightenment about the illness. Distinct diagnosis for NSSI would lead to more comprehensive treatment and understanding of the mental illness. Currently, every set of criterion differs depending on the entity conducting the study so no data is comparable. The social norm I violated was the courtesy norm. The value of courtesy is having good manners towards other people. We build our reputation by being a respectable and thoughtful person. Being courteous is important; we don’t want to be surrounded with rude and impolite people. We want people to follow the norms at all times, in this case, the courtesy norm and also, to be considerate. The courtesy norm acts as a mechanism of social control by creating a social conduct, we need norms in order to know what is wrong and what is right. If we didn’t have this norm no one will have respect towards others. Courtesy is part of what we are; it is a norm that defines how we behave. For this assignment, I wasn’t sure what I was going to do to violate this norm but until I was there I decided I was going for it and I was going to cut in front of a line. Before violating this norm, I predicted that what I was going to do was going to cause some irritation and anger. They would maybe think my parents raised me well.
